Embracing The Beauty Of Nature
Updated: Jul 28, 2018
The wonders of the great outdoors are to be marveled by all who take the time to stop and behold creation.
“Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:7-10)
Are you looking for adventure in your life? Embrace where you are! There has not been a place in the world that I haven’t enjoyed. Fun is all around us. The outdoors offers beauty in every environment whether the desert, beach, mountains, rivers, stream, both cities and wilderness. It is about our attitude and opening our eyes to the beauty around us. It is about the essence and sweetness of the moments.
There is a song that I loved as a teenager that I learned in Young Life. The lyrics say, Love Him in the morning when you see the sun arising. Love Him in the evening when He took you through the day. And, in the end between times when you feel the pressure coming, remember that He loves you and He promises to stay.
It is this promise that brings peace, joy, and satisfaction in every circumstance and environment. Embracing the beauty of every country, culture, and individual. I praise God for each day as I have learned to be grateful and see the beauty around me.
I count myself blessed as I was raised in a family who cherished the outdoors. My parents instilled in me a appreciation of creation. They also taught all of us kids to take care of nature. Yes, my siblings and I were taught from an early age not only to enjoy the outdoors, but also that we had a responsibility to care for our planet. Littering was out of the question and respect for animals, the power of fire, water, and weather were also often shared through experience as we explored the outdoors through skiing, camping, rafting, hiking, boating, and other adventurous activities.
It wasn’t surprising to my parents that I first studied Leisure Services at Central Washington University after my military service. During my tour in the Army I was an Explorer Scout Advisor while stationed in Germany and enjoyed traveling, repelling, rock climbing, camping as well as many other outdoor activities with the groups, I lead.
Just out of college I landed a great job working for the Air Force developing an outdoor recreational program for service members and their families. It was a blast, as I was able to learn to scuba dive, and wind surf. The position offered me an opportunity to experience all my favorite activities and even get paid for it. Of course I planned activities and was responsible for the groups I lead, but I loved it. Today, this love and respect for the outdoors continues.
As I travel and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors I am often saddened by the litter I see everywhere. I do my part to clean up the area and carry trash out. Much more education is needed to keep our planet clean for the next generation to enjoy. When you walk on beaches covered in plastic or even find yourself swimming in garbage it makes you wonder when people will wake up to the need for change.
My son once said to me that he didn’t see me as a tree hugger, but I am. Since I was a teen I was an activist proclaiming the importance of taking care of creation. It is our responsibility to teach through example. Let’s do our part to tend the garden well. We have been blessed to share the beauty around us.
Yes, breathe in the glorious nature about you and give thanks. But, also I am reminded not to take it for granted; to do my part to keep it beautiful and in areas where I can help support a cleanup program I enjoying joining in. I hope you too would join me in caring for our world for the best outdoor adventures are those where we leave the area undisturbed for the next person to enjoy.
“Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds.” (Psalm 148:7-10)
Let's be a blessing to His creation by honoring the beauty we have so richly been given. The world is ours to behold in all of it glory. therefore we can show our gratitude to God by both enjoying and caring for it.
